Post-16 education options

1. Overview

Raising the participation age is the Government's policy that all young people have to stay in some form of learning until their 18th birthday.

This does not necessarily mean young people must stay in school beyond the age of 16, they will be able to choose from:

  • further education college
  • sixth form college
  • school sixth form
  • apprenticeship
  • independent providers
  • work with training
  • self-employment with training
  • volunteering with training

For more information see the raising the participation age on GOV.UK. You can also take a look at the RPA Booklet - October 2017 PDF 2.6 MB to find out more.
