Raising the participation age

In 2013, the government raised the participation age of students. This means that young people have a legal duty to participate in some form of education or training until their 18th birthday.

This does not necessarily mean young people must stay in school beyond the age of 16. They can choose from:

  • further education college
  • sixth form college
  • school sixth form
  • apprenticeship
  • independent providers
  • work with training
  • self-employment with training
  • volunteering with training

Visit the GOV.UK website for more information about raising the participation age.
