Online banking

Visiting your bank in person isn't always easy. Banking online, also known as internet banking, can be much more convenient. It might seem scary to be dealing with your money online at first, but millions of people use online banking every day in a safe and secure way.

Online banking makes it easy to check how much money is in your account, pay people or companies, update your details and control how your bank contacts you.

With online banking, you can manage your money at any time and from any place with an internet connection.

If you use online or mobile banking you can check your bank account quickly and securely. This means that if there are any problems you can spot them quickly. You can also keep on top of your finances.

Getting started with online banking

Signing up for online banking is very simple. All you need is:

  • access to the internet
  • an account with your bank, building society or credit union

You'll be able to sign up easily online, although the method for registering may be slightly different depending on who you bank with.

Staying safe

Your bank will never e-mail you a link asking you to check or change your account details. They'll ask you to login to your account using your usual method of access. Clicking links in e-mails can result in forms of malicious software being installed on your device.

Try to avoid doing any online banking where you are accessing public Wi-Fi.
