Work starts on transforming Merseyway's open spaces as part of multi-million pound regeneration scheme

Merseyway is in the process of being modernised with new surfacing and improved public space as part of the multi-million-pound regeneration of Stockport town centre.

Works started earlier this year in refurbishing and waterproofing the unseen section of Merseyway – the 400m tunnel that covers the River Mersey as it runs through the town.

Council teams have already carried out extensive repairs and structural improvements from below and now need to waterproof the bridge to extend its lifespan.

While this work takes place, the council is taking this opportunity to improve the shopping centre open space with:
• high quality paving
• new lighting
• benches
• planters and landscaping

These works will help to support the wider regeneration of the town centre and will complement the investments planned at Stockroom and the former BHS unit, which are part of our ongoing strategy to improve the high street and create a vibrant town centre that benefits visitors, residents and local businesses.

Above-ground works are almost complete on Vernon Walk and our teams are well on their way with works on Deanery Way (South) which connects Merseyway to the Underbanks. Those works are planned to be completed by mid-May 2022.

From April 25, the main works will commence in the external precinct, specifically in the area in front of Primark, Bhaiji Newsagents and Timpsons. At the same time Deanery Way (North), adjacent to Costa Coffee, will close as this will form the access route for construction vehicles to move materials in and out of Merseyway.

Access to all shops and premises will be maintained during business hours, with measures in place at all times to minimise noise and dust associated with the works.

Mark Glynn, Director of Place Management at Stockport Council, said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Stockport’s town centre and this work taking place in Merseyway is just part of our multi-million investment to ensure our town is a great place to live, work, shop and play.

“We will do everything we can to ensure these essential works cause as little disruption as possible, including working closely with businesses, residents and the contractor, whilst ensuring that the finished scheme is something that will serve the town for years to come.”

The works are planned to be completed during summer 2023.
