Why everyone's going out in Stockport Town Centre now

Last updated: 22 January 2026

In the last year alone, 10 new bars, restaurants and cultural venues have opened, visitor numbers are up, and events like Foodie Friday are drawing big crowds every month. Stockport is now one of Greater Manchester’s most exciting evening destinations, powered by independents, long standing local businesses, history, and a renewed sense of local pride.

The Underbanks has become the heartbeat of the nightlife scene. After more than £7 million of regeneration, the cobbled streets and historic buildings are buzzing again, with cocktail bars, vinyl shops that turn into night-time music spots, live blues drifting out of doorways, and characterful venues that feel like they’ve always been part of Stockport. Cherry Jam brings imaginative cocktails and themed nights, while Loft Social offers games like shuffleboard and pétanque in a relaxed, playful space, alongside a a wide mix of other bars, eateries and independents that give the area its unique energy and reflect the diversity of Stockport’s business community.

Neil Garner, co-director of Loft Social and owner of Cherry Jam, said:

“We’ve seen a fantastic response from people wanting something different from their night out in Stockport. Loft Social is about giving people more choice - social activities, games, and a fun, relaxed environment alongside great drinks and music. The buzz shows just how ready Stockport is for venues like this.”

Other Underbanks highlights include The Spinn Off, championing local beers, organic wines, and community events; Bruk, with DJs and curated wines; Odioba, offering ramen and a listening-bar experience after relocating from Ancoats; and St Mary’s Church, hosting world-class music through the ‘Live at St Mary’s’ programme. Foodie Friday continues to bring thousands together each month for food, drink, and entertainment, supporting not just traders on the night but businesses and venues right across the town centre, with many more local traders contributing to the vibrancy of the area.

The town’s pubs have character and history, and the mix of old favourites and new energy keeps them thriving. From karaoke nights on Chestergate to the award-winning Magnet, the Swan and Two Necks, the town’s pubs offer something for everyone. The Crown Inn and Angel Inn have been revitalised, the Wellington continues to draw regulars, Fitzpatrick’s is a newer addition, and The White Lion, thought to be Stockport’s oldest pub, reopened in 2024 after careful restoration. Whether it’s live music at The Spinning Top or a sing-along on Chestergate, Stockport’s pub scene remains a proud tradition with many other much-loved local pubs and venues that continue to play a vital role in Stockport’s social life and identity.

Stockport isn’t just about nightlife. Redrock combines restaurants with bowling, darts, shuffleboard, and The Light Cinema, still the best-performing cinema in its group nationally, is drawing loyal audiences each week. Stockroom adds café culture, workshops, performances, and family-friendly events and the iconic Stockport Plaza also continues to delight with live shows, classic films, and family pantos, helping to make the town centre welcoming for all ages and interests.

There’s genuinely something for everyone — from traditional pubs and live music venues to cocktail bars and family-friendly spaces.
