Vital safety improvements to be made to Wellington Road (A6) bridge in Stockport
Improvements to the structure include replacing both sides of the existing barrier with a new 1.8m high steel barrier
Work to carry out essential safety improvements on Wellington Road bridge across the M60 at Stockport will begin later this month.
Wellington Road bridge crosses the M60 motorway between junctions 1 and 27 and improvements to the structure include replacing both sides of the existing barrier with a new 1.8m high steel barrier.
This will significantly enhance safety for road users, cyclists and pedestrians who use the structure. The work, being carried out by National Highways, which will take place in three phases, will begin on Monday 25 April with a view to completing the work by the end of July.
Subeyda Fiqow, National Highways assistant project manager, said: “Those who use Wellington Road bridge will benefit from these essential safety improvements. Access for cyclists and pedestrians will be maintained throughout the project.
“At times we will need to close the M60, the A560 and the A6 Wellington Road to road users to ensure the work is carried out safely, however we aim to minimise disruption by doing it in phases and putting clearly-signed diversions in place. I want to thank people for their patience while we work to create safer journeys.”
The work will be carried out in different phases as outlined below. Between each phase, there will be some overlap in the construction activities. This is to speed up the overall programme and complete the work as fast as possible.
The A6 Wellington Road (between Heaton Lane and A5145) will be closed to motorists between 9pm and 5am (extended to 7am on weekends) to carry out the work safely. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be available at all times.
The M60 and the A560 Great Egerton Street will also be occasionally closed to enable the safe set up of the temporary scaffolding and the work site area.
Phase One
Phase one involves installing temporary scaffolding required to replace the safety barrier. The work will take place overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest.

The work will take place overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest, and will involve full overnight closures of the A6 Wellington Road (between Heaton Lane and A5145), and lane closures during the day.
Phase Three
Phase three will see the removal of the temporary scaffolding at night, when traffic flows are at their lowest.
