Viaduct Park hosts the return of Stockport Moves
The Town of Culture legacy event will take place on Sunday, June 9, from 11am
Stockport is set to welcome scores of visitors to its town centre once again as the town celebrates the joy of moving at the Town of Culture legacy event 'Stockport Moves' on Sunday 9 June, from 11am.
Viaduct Park will host a range of cycling activities including the opportunity to try out the brand new helix ramp and cycling infrastructure (come and grab a route map on the day), and an area to try out accessible bikes including hand bikes and adapted trikes. Bring your bike down for an MOT by local partners Never Mind the Bike Shop and get some freebies and local and regional travel information from the Stockport Council Active Travel Team.
The park will be the starting point for the guided walks available on the day that cater for all abilities. Walkaday, a local experienced walking group will lead a five mile walk along the Trans Pennine Trail, before looping back to Stockport town centre. Life Leisure and Age UK Stockport will take all who join them on a trip down memory lane, with a unique opportunity to view key Stockport landmarks and places how they looked in bygone times as well as learn some local knowledge and facts about the area.
The fun continues outside the Merseyway Shopping Centre, where there is another event space for holistic movement and wellbeing, hosted by local experts Upward Frog and Tides Within. This area will include an exciting demonstration of Capoeira, a system of physical discipline and movement originating among Brazilian slaves, treated as a martial art and dance form, to live music. A children's jungle yoga session perfect for children aged five to ten, children will learn the different animals through the various yoga poses in this creative, exciting, and interactive yoga experience.
There will be opportunities for everyone to try a little yoga, with mindful movements, a short session which explores the holistic nature of yoga. Focused on breathwork, mindfulness, and relaxation, it is designed to help participants unwind and recharge. Inclusive yoga class is suitable for all ages and experience levels, and all will be welcome including wheelchair users and those who’d prefer to practice in a chair which will be provided. Or get energised with some qigong, a mind-body exercise that combines movement, meditation, and breathing.
Other activities include fitness challenges and sports taster sessions from Life Leisure and the fastest goal challenge with Stockport County Community Trust and their inflatable speed cage. As well as a chance to chat to the men’s mental health support group - Banter and Brews.
There will be food available at the event with local food providers, Exclusive Scoop and Sticky Fingers serving up hot food, coffee, and sweet treats on the day.
