Residents are being offered a rare chance to step behind the scenes of one of Stockport’s most treasured historic landmarks, as Bramall Hall opens its scaffolding for exclusive “Scale the Scaffold” rooftop tours.
The special hard hat experience allows visitors to climb onto the roof of the Grade I listed Tudor manor house to see vital restoration work up close. The project, made possible through a major grant from the Arts Council England’s Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND) alongside investment from Stockport Council, is protecting and preserving the Hall for generations to come.
During the 45 minute tour, visitors will enjoy views across Bramhall Park and discover the traditional building techniques being used to repair the Hall’s diminishing gritstone tiles, gutters, stonework and decorative high level features. Conservation specialists will be on hand to explain the craftsmanship involved in helping to protect and preserve the historic fabric of the building and its collections.
Councillor Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection at Stockport Council, said: “Bramall Hall is a cornerstone of Stockport’s heritage, and this work is essential to protect it for future generations. The Scale the Scaffold tours offer a truly rare chance to see Bramall Hall from an entirely new perspective. We’re delighted to give visitors the opportunity to get close to the restoration work, meet the experts involved, and appreciate the remarkable craftsmanship that has protected this historic hall for over 600 years.”
Tours cost £20 plus booking fee, include all safety equipment, and are strictly for over 18s due to the nature of the climb, which involves staircases, uneven flooring and high level platforms. Appropriate footwear — such as walking boots — is essential.
Spaces are limited to eight people per session, with new dates added regularly.
Visitors can also take advantage of a special offer: showing a ‘Scale the Scaffold’ roof top tour ticket at the Visitor Centre on the same day will secure a £5 discount on Bramall Hall’s 2pm guided tour (subject to availability).
