Stockport’s Warm Spaces provide further support for pensioners this winter
This winter Stockport Council is working hard to provide welcoming warm spaces across the borough, particularly to support older people.
As well as our Pensioner Assist Network, that is helping residents apply for Pension Credit and other benefits they may be entitled to, we are opening up a range of warm spaces to help keep residents warm and well.
Warm Spaces, available across the borough, invite individuals to drop in and relax. These 39 spaces will remain open throughout the winter offer complimentary Wi-Fi, hot meals, and drinks. They also function as central hubs, providing information and guidance to signpost residents to further support.
Last year, our Warm Spaces supported thousands of Stockport residents through the winter months. Here are some of the comments that we received by those people who used the spaces:
• “…Lovely to be able to bring the kids and enjoy a brew in the warm...”
• “…I particularly appreciate the opportunity to make a hot drink – a god send in the recent freeze up...”
• “…Such a fantastic initiative. I’m so pleased to see the Hub used by the community in a real variety of ways...”
• “…A place for people to come and relax, play board games and chat. Working well in getting to know people and providing a space for them to feel loved…”
• “…Toasty space with a cheery welcome...”
All of Stockport’s libraries also act as Warm Spaces too – for full list and to view our Warm Spaces on a handy interactive map visit our Warm Spaces pages.
Councillor Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport, at Stockport Council, said:
“I’m really pleased to see our Warm Spaces scheme back for another year, and it’s amazing to see so many local community groups getting involved. The dedication and time that volunteers and staff put into making these spaces welcoming and supportive is incredible — thank you to everyone who plays a part in making this happen.
"We know winter can be tough, especially for our older residents, and we want to be there for them every step of the way. Whether it’s a hot drink, a warm meal, or just a friendly face, our Warm Spaces and the new Pensioner Assist Network are here to help keep Stockport warm and connected this winter.”
There is lots of other support available over to residents over the winter period. The Council and its partners have put in place a wide range of initiatives to help residents stay warm and well through the winter.
