Stockport Council has welcomed £6.82 million from Greater Manchester's £60 million pothole and highway maintenance fund, which will support essential maintenance and improvements to roads and infrastructure across the borough.
The funding will be used to deliver a range of priority schemes, including planned highway maintenance, carriageway patching, and work on bridges and structures.
The investment will help improve the roads and infrastructure that residents, communities and businesses rely on every day. However, maintaining a large and heavily used highway network requires sustained, long-term investment and greater funding over a number of years.
Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said:
“We welcome this funding, which we've been pushing for as part of our efforts to improve Stockport's roads and highways. It will help us carry out important maintenance and repair work.
"However, maintaining a large and heavily used network requires sustained, long-term investment and greater funding over a number of years, and we will continue to make the case for Stockport to receive the support it needs.
“We will use this funding carefully to support priority work, including planned highway maintenance, carriageway patching, bridges and structures.”
The funding will help improve the condition and resilience of Stockport's highway network, but further long-term investment will be needed to address the ongoing maintenance pressures facing the borough's roads, bridges and drainage infrastructure.
This latest funding will be used where it is needed most, while we continue to call for fair, long-term funding for Stockport’s roads and infrastructure.
