Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery to celebrate 100 years with special exhibition
100 years ago, the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery was built to honour those who sacrificed their lives in the First World War.
The gallery was created as a sanctuary where people could find beauty and comfort after the devastation of war.
To commemorate this big milestone, we are planning a number of exhibitions and events to run from October 2025 until February 2026. An important element of the commemorations will be a special exhibition of work created by the children and young people of Stockport to mark the centenary.
We are inviting children and young people to create a piece of artwork along the theme of ‘Beautiful Things’ in line with the intentions of founders of the War Memorial Art Gallery. We are looking for artworks inspired by something in Stockport that you find beautiful. This could be anything or anyone within the Borough that brings you joy when you see, hear, or touch it - and whose beauty you wish to share with others. Works can be submitted on an individual basis or as groups through schools, colleges or community organisations. It is anticipated that works will be exhibited in different phases throughout the centenary period.
Councillor Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection at Stockport Council, said:
"We’re thrilled to celebrate the centenary of the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery with the 'Beautiful Things' exhibition. This is a wonderful opportunity for the young people of Stockport to showcase their creativity and share what they find beautiful in our community.
“Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery is a special place. Since its opening in 1925, it has been the home to many special historic moments and important memories for many people across the borough - and serves as a lasting reminder of those who lost their lives during World War I and in subsequent conflicts.
“This exhibition - as well as other activities planned to mark its centenary year - will serve as a fitting tribute to one of Stockport’s most treasured landmarks.”
