Stockport Council’s Spring Clean campaign has shone a light on the daily work of Totally Local Company (TLC) who help to keep our neighbourhoods clean, safe and well cared for.

The campaign followed the TLC teams as they carried out their routine maintenance across the borough, which included gully cleansing and street cleaning, helping to reduce risks and keep roads and pavements clear.

They were joined throughout the day by Cabinet Members Cllr Grace Baynham and Cllr Jake Austin, who spent time with crews to see the work first‑hand and thank staff for their continued efforts.

The routine maintenance formed part of the council’s wider Spring Clean programme, which brings together council services, partners, community groups, schools and volunteers to improve local areas and celebrate civic pride.

Gully cleansing in the borough is carried out year‑round on a planned three-year rota, ensuring drains are kept clean. The team cleans up to 110 gullies a day, 2,000 a month, and more than 24,000 a year – which helps to keep 75,000 grids in the borough

Cllr Austin joined the crew, Stuart Nield and Daniel Murray, as they marked the 4,000th gully to be cleaned this year.

Alongside gully cleansing, TLC teams continued their regular street cleaning, litter removal and environmental maintenance work across Stockport.

The Spring Clean campaign also supports the ambitions set out in Stockport’s draft Parks and Greenspaces Strategy, which outlines a long‑term vision for more connected, resilient and accessible green spaces.

By encouraging volunteering, community action and stewardship, the campaign will help residents play an active role in shaping and caring for the natural spaces that matter to them.

It also shines a light on the vital role local people play in keeping Stockport looking its best, from organised litter picks to the ongoing work of Friends of Parks groups across the borough.

The Spring Clean campaign is about recognising the everyday work that keeps Stockport moving, as well as the role residents and communities play alongside our teams.

This is work that often goes unseen, but it has a real impact so to see gully cleansing and street cleaning in action was a reminder of how important this work is, to ensure our neighbourhoods look their best at all times.

It’s been great to spend time with TLC crews and see the scale of work that goes on behind the scenes. This is practical, frontline work that makes a real difference to people’s daily lives.

John White, Divisional Head of Greenspace and Environmental Services at Totally Local Company, said: “Our teams work hard all year round to keep Stockport clean and safe. The Spring Clean day of action has been a great opportunity to shine a light on gully cleansing, street cleaning and the other essential services we deliver for residents every day.”

Spring Clean activity will continue across the borough in the coming weeks, with updates shared through the council’s website, newsroom and social media channels.

Residents can find out when gullies in their area are scheduled to be cleaned, as well as report issues, by visiting the Grids and Drains.
