EPEC is a ground-breaking peer-led parenting programme that’s helped support over 2,000 children across the borough. Backed by Stockport Council and powered by local volunteers, the programme is being celebrated at a special anniversary event today (Wednesday 18 June) at the Light Cinema.
EPEC takes a refreshingly simple approach: train up local parents — known as Parent Group Leaders (PGLs) — to support other local parents. They run engaging, practical courses on everything from managing toddler tantrums to tackling teenage meltdowns, using their own lived experience to connect with others and share what works.
And it’s not just families who benefit. For many volunteers, becoming a PGL is life-changing — building confidence, boosting employability, and sparking new ambitions.
Cllr Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education says:
“EPEC is a true reflection of Stockport at its best - local parents leading the way, supporting each other, and making a real difference in their communities. It’s driven by families, built on shared experiences, and creating lasting change from within.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our Parent Group Leaders, whose dedication and passion are transforming lives in a deeply personal way. While Stockport Council is here to ensure families have access to the support they need, EPEC thrives because of the commitment, strength, and collaboration of parents themselves. A huge thank you to our inspiring Parent Group Leaders and community partners for making this possible.”
The impact so far:
- 7,000 hours of PGL volunteer time
- 691 parent attendees
- over 2,000 children and young people living in Stockport benefitted
- 112 courses delivered
- 88 Parent Group Leaders
- 48 PGLs progressed to securing new employment
- 6 separate course themes
And now, Stockport is being seen as a national leader in how peer-led parenting can build stronger families and communities.
“EPEC changed my life”
At today’s event, Parent Group Leaders like Steph, Becky and Laura will share the journeys that brought them here — and the ones they’re helping others begin.
Steph, a mum of four, trained as a PGL in 2019. The experience gave her the confidence to go back to education, complete a social work degree, and begin a new career helping families.
“EPEC was my turning point. I found my voice and my purpose — and I’ve never looked back.”
Becky, now a dedicated volunteer, overcame homelessness, mental health struggles and dyslexia before finding community and confidence through EPEC.
“Knowing I can help others — that I’m not alone and neither are they — is the best part of this work.”
Laura completed online PGL training during covid when the demand for support for parents juggling home schooling was high. She has now embarked on a new career path working directly with families.
“PGL training changed my life. I enjoy all the different dynamics of different PGLs and what each person brings to each course through their lived experiences”
EPEC are integral to our Family Hubs network, providing essential local support. They are also central to our Stockport Live Well approach, which focusses on connecting communities and putting people at the heart of everything we do.
