Stockport Council has been named Local Authority of the Year 2025 at the MJ Awards — a prestigious national event recognising excellence and innovation in local government across the UK.
The award reflects the collective efforts of council staff, partners and community groups in driving progress over the past year. From major investment to strengthened community partnerships, the recognition celebrates what has been achieved together through the borough’s shared One Stockport vision.
The judges praised Stockport’s “collective energy,” noting how the One Stockport ethos shone through “a powerful combination of investment, service delivery, and authentic co-production.” They highlighted the council’s commitment to people-centred progress — from large infrastructure projects to “the moving story of a new colleague supported into work.”
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of the Council, said: "This is a fantastic recognition of the dedication and hard work of our staff, partners, and everyone working to support Stockport.
"It is welcome national endorsement of the value for money Stockport council represents to local residents and the many hundreds of services delivered by the council. I also want to thank former Council Leader Cllr Mark Hunter for his ambition and commitment in helping shape the journey that brought us here.
"But we know an award doesn’t mean the job is done — we understand that many residents still face real challenges. We remain focused on listening, improving, and delivering for everyone across the borough in very challenging times for Local Government."
Michael Cullen, Chief Executive, added: “We’re proud of this recognition, and it’s right to take a moment to reflect on what’s been achieved through genuine teamwork. But we do so with humility, knowing there is still much more to do. Our focus remains firmly on supporting our communities, tackling inequalities, and building a stronger future together.”
The MJ Awards are organised by The Municipal Journal, the UK’s leading publication for local government.
