Stockport much improved in SEND revisit result

In September, Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out a revisit of our Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) services.

This was to see if the council has improved on weaknesses identified in the original 2018 inspection. This visit was only focussed on the original areas of weakness identified. You can read the letter detailing the full result of the revisit on the Ofsted website.

Chairs of the SEND board, Chris McLoughlin OBE and Anita Rolfe, have responded to the result with an open letter. You can read their response on the Stockport Local Offer website.

The local area are pleased that in four out of five areas the inspectors found significant progress. Inspectors commended the area on our profile-raising of SEND, saying that we have embedded the principle that ‘SEND is everyone’s business’.

In addition, inspectors commented that “leaders across education, health and social care understand the needs and outcomes of their children and young people well now.”

Councillor Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, commented: “This result is testament to the hard work of everyone in Stockport Family and the wider council. I’m thrilled that we have shown significant improvement in almost all areas: this demonstrates how far we have come since the last visit in 2018.

“I look forward to working closely with officers and fellow Members to continue to improve our SEND offer and further create opportunities for all of our young people across Stockport.”

While the area leaders are proud of the many positive things highlighted in the letter, we know that there is still lots of work to do and we need to further improve the lived experience of our families. The one area in which the inspection concluded we had not made significant progress was our assessment of some of our children and young people’s social care needs, and we have already begun working on this, developing a working group to deliver an accelerated improvement plan.
