Stockport foster carers awarded for transforming lives over 20 years

Kathy and Steve Hilditch were presented their prestigious award at a celebration event in October by the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Suzanne Wyatt, and Councillor Wendy Meikle.

Over the years, Kathy and Steve have opened their home and provided emergency, short-term and long-term foster care for 25 children and have had on average three children living with them at any time, amounting to an impressive 20,000 days of care over 20 years. One of these children, who is autistic and has severe learning difficulties, arrived 15 years ago when he was three and has been with them ever since.

Reflecting on their experience, Kathy Hilditch said: “I’d always wanted to foster and provide a family home for children who needed one. The children we foster are just an extension of our family and it’s enormously rewarding to see the difference when they’re given a loving caring and supportive family life.”

Steve Hilditch said: “When the children and young people first arrive with us they’re often really worried. Giving these children a safe, family home means they can stop worrying, start sleeping and start rebuilding their lives, and I’m so proud that we have played a part in making this happen.”

Councillor Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families & Education said: “We wanted to recognise and thank Kathy and Steve for the tireless commitment they’ve shown over the years in helping to turn the lives around of so many local children and young people. Kathy and Steve’s dedication is inspiring and shows just what a difference a loving, family home can have.”

With over 340 children in Stockport needing foster care, Stockport Council is calling on local residents to consider fostering. As part of Greater Manchester’s Fostering Fortnight, the council is celebrating foster carers, raising awareness of fostering’s importance in the community and dispelling some of the myths surrounding fostering. Those interested can attend local information sessions, where they will hear stories from foster carers and learn about the support Stockport Council offers.
