Stockport Council stands with young carers on Young Carers Action Day 2026

This annual national awareness day spotlights the incredible children and young people who help to look after family members who are unwell or disabled. These young carers are everyday heroes, making a remarkable difference to their families while managing the challenges of school, friendships and growing up.

The theme for this year’s Young Carers Action Day 2026 is ‘Fairer Futures for Young Carers’. It highlights the need for young carers to have the same opportunities as their peers to learn, grow and thrive. Research shows that young carers can face significant disadvantages as they navigate school, work and personal life whilst managing their caring roles. This year’s campaign calls for better awareness, understanding and long‑term support to give young carers the bright future they deserve.

Councillor Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “Children and young people who have taken on the role of carer for a friend or family member deserve the most understanding and support from everyone in their lives. They are putting their own dreams and wellbeing on hold to care for others, which is an incredibly noble choice. Together with Signpost Young Carers and other amazing organisations, we can help share the burden and create opportunities for these incredible children and young people.”

Young carers take on responsibilities beyond their years daily; often juggling complex home lives with their own growth and happiness. Many face struggle regarding education, family dynamics, finances and future employment prospects. Young Carers Action Day is an important opportunity to show them that they are seen, supported, valued and never alone.

For more than two decades, Signpost Young Carers has been at the heart of supporting young carers and their families in Stockport. Their amazing team works with children and young people aged 6 to 25, providing advice, activities, support and opportunities to connect with others who understand.

To mark Young Carers Action Day 2026, the Young Carers Service at Signpost for Carers will be:

  • Delivering special assemblies and workshops in schools across the borough
  • Hosting a Professional Training Event for Stockport’s teachers
  • Sharing inspiring stories and resources across social media to shine a spotlight on the strength, resilience and brilliance of young carers

These activities aim to raise awareness of the vital role young carers play and show just how important it is that we continue championing them.

As Stockport Council, we are committed to ensuring that young carers never feel alone and there is help available to balance their caring responsibilities with their own wellbeing and aspirations. By working closely with partners such as Signpost Young Carers, local schools and community organisations, we can help create a fairer future for every young carer in the borough.
