Stockport Council stands with young carers on Young Carers Action Day
This year’s theme, ‘Give Me A Break’ highlights the need for young carers to have time for themselves.
Stockport Council is proud to stand alongside and celebrate their incredible young carers on Young Carers Action Day (Wednesday, 12 March 2025).This national awareness day, organised by Carers Trust, shines a light on the dedication of young carers who go above and beyond every day to support their loved ones. This year’s theme, ‘Give Me A Break’ highlights the need for young carers to have time for themselves - to rest, recharge, and enjoy their childhood.
Young carers make a huge difference to their families, often taking on responsibilities well beyond their years. From providing emotional support to managing household tasks, they give so much of themselves while also trying to keep up with school and friendships. Stockport Council is committed to ensuring that young carers never feel alone and that they get the help they need to balance their caring roles with their own wellbeing.
To mark the occasion, Cllr Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, signed a pledge in support of young carers. During a visit to Signpost for Carers, a local organisation dedicated to supporting carers of all ages, she reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to recognising and championing young carers across Stockport.
Cllr Meikle said :“Young carers show incredible dedication every day, often putting the needs of others before their own. It is vital that we not only recognise their contributions but also take meaningful action to support them. The council is determined to ensure that every young carer has the opportunity to enjoy their childhood, succeed in their education, and take time for themselves. By working together with schools, healthcare providers, and fantastic organisations like Signpost for Carers, we can make a real difference in their lives. Let’s give young carers the break they so richly deserve.”
