Stockport Council receives White Ribbon Accreditation

Stockport Local Authority has become White Ribbon Accredited making a commitment to ending men’s violence against women.

Stockport Council has committed to working to end men’s violence against women by becoming White Ribbon Accredited. As an Accredited organisation, Stockport Local Authority will develop and deliver a comprehensive Action Plan to change the cultures that lead to abuse and violence and promote gender equality. Some of the actions that will be taken include creating a task and finish group to build aims and objectives and to work towards appointing volunteer Champions and Ambassadors to carry the message out to more men and awareness across the borough.

Councillor Helen Foster-Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities & Housing, said, “We’re proud to be White Ribbon accredited and will strive to raise awareness, educate and campaign to bring about change.

Male violence against women in our society is disgracefully prevalent, and we can only change those cultures by promoting a message of respect and tolerance and leading by example. By working together in partnership with our communities, services and organisations, we will endeavour to prevent domestic abuse and create zero tolerance across the borough.”

White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people, especially men and boys, to individually and collectively take action and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence. To wear a white ribbon is to promise never to commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women.

Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK, said, “White Ribbon Accredited organisations are able to make a real difference towards ending violence against women by promoting a culture of respect and equality among their staff and wider communities. By raising awareness among employees, people can learn how to become allies and call out violent and abusive behaviour when they see it at work and in the wider community. We are delighted to welcome Stockport Local authority as one of our White Ribbon Accredited organisations and are looking forward to working with them towards ending violence against women once and for all”.

On Tuesday, 6 December, an event will be held at Stockport Homes to promote domestic abuse services across the borough to the community. Organisations from across Stockport and Greater Manchester will present informative stalls from 10am-2pm.
