The award, given under the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), celebrates the council’s commitment to integrating the unique skills of former military personnel into its workforce and supporting the broader Armed Forces community within the borough.

The Gold Award, which is the highest honour in the ERS and is reserved for employers who go above and beyond in their support for Defence People. It also praises the council for its proactive approach in recruiting and supporting both serving and former Armed Forces members, as well as its flexibility in accommodating the needs of Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.

The accreditation also recognises the work that the council undertakes within the community to raise awareness of the armed forces covenant, fostering support for the Armed Forces and working in partnership with local initiatives e.g. supporting Armed Forces Day within the town centre and working closely with Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation (SAFCO).

“We are extremely proud to accept the Gold Award,” said the Leader of Stockport Council, Cllr Mark Hunter.

“This achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces community. The skills and life experiences that our Armed Forces personnel bring to Stockport Council, our local businesses and the borough have been invaluable. We encourage others with similar backgrounds to consider joining our workforce as they transition to civilian life.

“We will continue to work closely with SAFCO and the wider Armed Forces community in Stockport, supporting cadet services and ensuring that all forces personnel, reservists, veterans, and their families have access to the support they need. Raising awareness of the Armed Forces support networks remains a priority Stockport Council.”

Amanda Peers and Moz Perkins, speaking on behalf of Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation (SAFCO), said “We would like to offer our sincere congratulations to Stockport Council on achieving the employer’s Gold Award. This accreditation demonstrates the hard work and commitment of the council in their continued support of the Armed Forces community in Stockport.”

“The approach taken in Stockport to involve the Armed Forces community in the decision-making process is quite unique, meaning that there is continuous communication to inform and influence decisions affecting the community. Long may the good work continue for the benefit of those who have or are still serving in the Armed Forces and their families.”
