Stockport Council holds civic commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022
On Thursday 27 January 2022, the Council broadcast its Civic Commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day, which was held virtually this year.
Holocaust Memorial Day is the international date on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides around the world. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 is ‘One Day’.
Speaking at the event alongside councillors across all political groups were Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke, Ata Ashley, who lost members of her family during the genocide in Cambodia, and Rabbi Greg Bank of Yeshurun Hebrew Congregation in Gatley, Cheadle.
Music was provided by Stockport a capella group Voices Achord, and pupils from Priestnall School participated in a poignant candle-lighting ceremony.
This event has been recorded and will be available to the public soon.
The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Adrian Nottingham said: “The commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day has become part of the civic calendar in Stockport, and I am delighted that we have been able to continue to mark this date despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic.
