Stockport Council celebrates Volunteers Week
This Volunteers Week (1-7 June) we recognise the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our communities and say thank you.
Volunteering can range from having a regular volunteer role you attend on a weekly basis such as working in a charity shop to ad hoc or one-off volunteer roles such as attending planned gardening days at green spaces or helping to fundraise at events.
There are many reasons people choose to volunteer, including:
- Making a difference to the lives of others
- Giving back to an organisation that has impacted a person’s life
- Helping other less fortunate
At the Stockport Volunteer Hub, you can get information for everything related to volunteering in Stockport including support and guidance for anyone who wants to volunteer. The hub aims to match potential volunteers to volunteering opportunities in organisations in different sectors across the borough. For more information, please visit the Stockport Volunteer Hub website.
Cllr Frankie Singleton said “Thank you to all the fantastic volunteers in Stockport for all they do to support our local communities. They are definitely the unsung heroes of our borough and the work they do is invaluable. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding and is a fantastic way to meet new people and get to know and help your local community.”
Rita Higgs volunteers as a Digital Champion for Digiknow. Rita became a volunteer through her local library. She then enrolled to do some training with Starting Point. Rita said “The training was excellent and gave me a chance to meet other volunteers. I get a real buzz from volunteering with DigiKnow. It's great when someone comes in with something which has been bugging them on their device and they go out with a big smile”.
Find out more about how you can become a digital champion and read more about Rita’s experience of being a digital champion on the council website..
