Stockport Council has welcomed the government's temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, supporting the move as an important step in helping to reduce the risk of wildfires during the current period of hot and dry weather.
The government announced the temporary restrictions on Friday afternoon, following a series of significant wildfires across the country and growing concerns about the risks posed by disposable barbecues during drought and heatwave conditions. The ban applies to retailers and online sellers across the UK.
Stockport Council has long prohibited the use of disposable barbecues in its parks and open spaces and is continuing to urge residents to take care when enjoying the outdoors this summer. Earlier on Friday, the council issued a plea to businesses in the town to withdraw them from sale.
Cllr Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection at Stockport Council, said:
We welcome the government's decision to introduce a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues during this period of extreme weather.
The recent wildfires seen across the country have highlighted how quickly fires can spread in hot, dry conditions and the devastating impact they can have on communities, wildlife and the environment.
Our parks and green spaces are among Stockport's greatest assets, and we want people to enjoy them safely. Supporting measures that help reduce the risk of accidental fires is an important part of protecting these valued places.
Following the announcement, the council is reminding residents that disposable barbecues, fire pits, open flames, fireworks and sky lanterns are not permitted in Stockport's parks and open spaces.
Residents are also advised to:
Dispose of litter responsibly
Take care when smoking outdoors
Never leave glass bottles or other waste in parks and green spaces
Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999
The council is continuing to work with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and local partners to raise awareness of fire risks and encourage safe behaviour during this period of hot weather.
