The winners of this year’s Stockport Children’s Book Awards were announced at a special ceremony this week, following months of reading, voting and author events involving children from schools across the borough.
Children across Stockport voted for their favourite books in three categories, with 36 schools taking part by reading the shortlisted titles. Around 5,500 pupils also met shortlisted authors through online visits, helping to inspire a love of reading and storytelling.
The celebration was attended by the authors and illustrators of the shortlisted books, alongside guests including the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Mark Hunter. The event brought together children, teachers and families from across the borough to celebrate reading, creativity and the achievements of young readers.
The winning titles were:
- Best Picture Book: Jenny Peckles Lays Eggs with Speckles, by Rachel Emily, illustrated by Paul Delaney
- Best Read for Juniors: Good Bits, by Kes Gray, illustrated by Ruby Wright
- Best Read for Upper Juniors: Gloam, by Jack Mackay
Councillor Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection, who attended the evening, said:
The Stockport Children’s Book Awards are a wonderful celebration of reading, creativity and the power of stories to inspire young people. It was fantastic to see so many children from schools across Stockport taking part, sharing their love of books and helping to choose this year’s winners.
