Running from 28 September to 5 October, this programme of events on your doorstep brings together activities taking place as part of International Day of Older Persons (1 October) and Silver Sunday (4 October), and includes a wide range of local events designed to help people stay active, connected and involved in their communities.
The week brings together a lively mix of events for residents to enjoy, from Northern Soul from Home Run Soul Club, guided heritage walk and chair based exercise at Stockroom to a celebration at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery with guided walks, crafts, cake, conversation and a visit from the Mayor.
There will also be free admission to Stockport’s museums for people aged 60 and over, alongside coffee mornings, quizzes, music, movement and wellbeing activities across the borough.
The programme supports Stockport's ambition to be an Age Friendly borough, creating more opportunities for people to stay connected, active and involved in their communities. It also reflects the wider Live Well approach, helping residents to live healthy, independent and fulfilling lives.
Activities will take place in libraries, community venues, museums and neighbourhood spaces across the borough, including Bredbury, Marple, Cheadle, Hazel Grove and Stockport town centre. Residents can take a trip down memory lane over coffee and cake, join friendly walks, enjoy a quiz, and dance along at a 70s silent disco or simply come along for a chat and meet new people.
Residents can also drop into the Live Well suite at Fred Perry House for an open morning on Tuesday 29 September from 10am to 12 noon, or an open afternoon on Wednesday 30 September from 2pm to 4pm. It is a chance to find out more about support to live well independently, including technology and adaptations that can help people stay safe and well at home.
Councillor Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection
Later life should be celebrated and recognised as a time to stay connected, active and involved in the things that matter most to us.
Creating an Age Friendly Stockport means making sure people have opportunities to build friendships, stay active, share experiences and feel part of their community at every stage of life.
This programme brings together a fantastic range of activities across the borough and I encourage everyone to explore what's happening on their doorstep and get involved.
Free museum admission will also be available for people aged 60 and over at participating venues across Stockport, including Stockport Air Raid Shelters, Bramall Hall and Staircase House. Residents can find full event details and the latest updates by visiting our What's On pages
