Stay safe and well in the warm weather

With warm weather predicted from Thursday, Stockport Council is urging residents to stay safe in the sun and the heat.

Older people, those with an underlying health conditions and the young are particularly vulnerable to the effects of hot weather due to dehydration.

Ten tips to stay safe in the sun and heat:

  • Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
  • Try to stand and walk in the shade
  • Apply sunscreen. Always use at least factor 15 sunscreen that has the letters "UVA" in a circle logo and at least 4 star UVA protection. Regularly reapply sun cream even if it claims to be once a day brand
  • Wear a hat and light scarf
  • Avoid extreme physical exertion. If you can’t avoid strenuous outdoor activity, keep it for cooler parts of the day e.g., early morning or evening
  • Have plenty of cold drinks, carry water
  • Keep an eye on isolated, elderly, ill or very young people
  • Wear light, loose fitting cotton clothes
  • Try to get help if you feel dizzy, weak, anxious or have intense thirst and headache
  • Close curtains during the day to keep rooms cool
