Review of decision to consult on the closure of St Mary’s RC Primary School
At the end of 2022 the Diocese of Salford undertook a consultation on the future of St Mary’s RC Primary School.
This school had a falling pupil roll for some time as a consequence of low preferencing for the school. The school had received an inadequate judgement from OFSTED. Diocesan trustees have now considered the responses to the consultation where the majority wanted the school to stay open in some form and the decision has been made for St Mary’s to join the Diocese of Salford’s Emmaus Catholic Academy Trust.
Cllr Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Families said, “I am pleased that the views of the community have been listened to. The council was aware of the strong support for the school shown during the consultation. We welcome the decision made by the Diocese of Salford for St Mary’s to remain open and to become part of the Diocese of Salford’s Emmaus Catholic Academy Trust. By joining the trust we hope that the school will quickly improve on the work already undertaken by the council, governors and school leaders to increase the quality of education for pupils attending the school.
