Remembrance in Stockport 2024
Commemorative services and events taking place across the borough for Remembrance Sunday, 10 November.
On Remembrance Sunday, the Mayor of Stockport will lead the borough in paying respects at the Civic Act of Remembrance outside Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, Wellington Road South, Stockport, SK3 8AB.
At precisely 11am, there will be a 2 minute silence, beginning with the Last Post and ending with the Reveille. Following prayers, hymns and reflections, wreaths will be laid on the steps of the War Memorial.
The Art Gallery will be open from 9.30am on Sunday 10 November, for people to pay their respects.
The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Suzanne Wyatt, said “on Remembrance Sunday we remember the sacrifices made by men and women across the continents to free the world from the tyranny that threatened us all. It was not an easy war as the Canadian soldier physician, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrea, so clearly pointed out in the first two verses of his famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae died of pneumonia near the end of the First World War.
Please, if you can, join us at 11am on Sunday, 10 November 2024 at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery for a service of remembrance where we can remember all the Stopfordians who contributed to the final victory.
If you cannot join us, take a moment at 11am to consider these words of the Kohima Epitaph: ‘Tell Them of Us and Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.'”
The Mayor is asking residents to support the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal, which provides the primary source of funds to maintain the Royal British Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes.
