Protect yourself from fraud with expert advice as BBC Scam Safe Week comes to Stockport
Residents will have the chance to meet fraud experts and gain vital knowledge on how to stay safe.
Stockport is gearing up to host a major event during BBC Scam Safe Week as the roadshow rolls into Merseyway Shopping Centre this Friday, 29th November. Residents will have the chance to meet fraud experts and gain vital knowledge on how to stay safe from scams and fraud, just in time for the festive season.
Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from two major high-street banks, Greater Manchester Police’s Fraud Investigation Team, Age UK Manchester, and NASMA (National Association of Student Money Advisers), all of whom will be offering advice on how to stay safe from scams and fraud this winter. Additionally, Stockport Council’s Cost of Living Helpline team will have an information stand and will be on hand to speak to residents about the financial support options that may be available.
The event will be headlined by Nick Stapleton, the popular host of Scam Interceptors. Nick will be at the event until 1pm, answering residents’ questions about scams alongside experts. Live coverage from Merseyway will feature on BBC Morning Live from 10-10.45am and will continue on BBC Radio Manchester, where Joe McGrath will broadcast from 10am - 2pm.
Councillor Jilly Julian, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources at Stockport Council, said: “Scammers are always on the lookout for opportunities, and sadly, this time of year is no exception. They know people are busy and might let their guard down during the festive season. That’s why events like the BBC Scam Safe roadshow are so important—they give people the knowledge and tools they need to stay one step ahead.
“We know this winter is tough for many, with the cost-of-living crisis affecting so many households. That’s why we’re putting £300k into helping our low income pensioners, and continue to support residents facing the biggest financial struggles. I’d really encourage everyone to pop down to the event. Not only will you learn how to protect yourself from scams, but you’ll also find out about the support available from Stockport Council to help you through these challenging times.”
Victoria Nichol, Centre Manager at Merseyway said: “We are absolutely delighted to host the BBC Scam Safe Week Roadshow here at Merseyway Shopping Centre. As a hub for the local community, the well-being of Stockport residents is always our top priority and we are committed to supporting initiatives that protect and empower the people in our town. With scams and fraud becoming increasingly sophisticated, this event offers an invaluable opportunity for people to access expert advice and learn how to stay safe.”
Stockport Council is dedicated to helping residents through the winter months with initiatives such as:
Warm Spaces - providing safe and welcoming spaces for individuals and groups to drop in and relax. These spaces will remain open until the end of February and offer complimentary Wi-Fi, hot meals, and drinks. They also act as central hubs, providing information and guidance to signpost residents to further support. More details on the Warm Spaces scheme will be available soon.-
Cost of living support - offering assistance to those facing the greatest financial difficulties, including family support vouchers - worth £90 per eligible child - will be distributed to over 8,000 eligible families in early December, crisis support and help with accessing benefits.
