This month marks a major milestone in Stockport’s transformation - one year since the opening of Stockport Interchange, a £140m state-of-the-art transport hub that has redefined the towns future. More than just a travel gateway, the Interchange has delivered new homes, green spaces, and a dynamic urban centre—paving the way for Stockport’s bold £1 billion regeneration.

In its first year, Stockport Interchange has:

  • Improved travel for Stockport residents and commuters with more than 350,000 bus departures this year
  • Seen Viaduct Park, the stunning two-acre roof-top green space, host 75 events, creating a central hub for activities and well-being events
  • Welcomed more than 300 new residents to Stockport in the new 196 high-quality apartments overlooking Viaduct Park and the Interchange
  • Won multiple awards for innovation, planning and design.

A nationally recognised success story

Stockport Interchange has been celebrated as a leading example in urban regeneration, earning prestigious awards including:

  • Royal Town Planning Institute Awards – Winner of the Silver Jubilee Cup for Best Planning Scheme of the Year
  • International Partnership Awards – Winner of Best Financial Structure
  • National Transport Awards – Winner of Design, Engineering, and Construction Project of the Year
  • Manchester Chamber of Commerce Awards 2024 – Shortlisted for Building of the Year

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said:

Viaduct Park has quickly become a vibrant community space hosting:

  • The spectacular 2024 Cultural Weekender
  • Family-friendly activities, including arts and craft, well-being sessions and pop-up sports
  • A celebration event for the opening of the eye-catching helix ramp showcasing the new sustainable travel infrastructure with Improved connectivity to the Trans Pennine Trail and River Mersey.

Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester, said:
“Stockport Interchange showcases everything we are striving for with the Bee Network. It’s modern, accessible, and sustainable, making it easier than ever for people to choose greener travel options. It’s also set the standard for future interchange redevelopments across Greater Manchester.”

Stockport's regeneration doesn't stop here

Stockport’s transformation is far from over. This year will see:

  • The iconic Weir Mill transformed, bringing 253 stunning new homes independent bars and restaurants, and vibrant public spaces.
  • The completion of Great Places’ Platform scheme, delivering 73 much-needed affordable homes to rent.
  • The launch of Stockroom—a new town centre hub featuring a modern library, a children’s creative learning space, and a welcoming café—in the heart of our shopping centre, Merseyway.

With momentum building, Stockport is leading the way as one of the UK’s most ambitious town centre regeneration projects, creating a thriving community where no one is left behind.
