New crossings as part of A34 corridor project will help pupils as school year begins
The first two schemes, on Wilmslow Road and Gatley Road, have now been finished
Walking and wheeling to school will be easier for pupils in Cheadle after the first milestone was completed on the multi-million pound project to improve the A34 corridor.
In November 2023, the government announced funding had been approved to make a series of improvements to the A34 corridor in Cheadle.
The project consists of 12 different schemes, and work started on the first two schemes in June.
These two schemes, located on Gatley Road and at the junction of Broadway and Wilmslow Road, have now been finished.
With their close proximity to local schools, including Kingsway and Lady Barn House School, the improvements have included new pedestrian crossings, and revamped road layouts allowing upgraded crossing opportunities for pupils and residents to access their destination.
The new traffic signals at the Wilmslow Road junction will also make exiting Broadway easier, and safer, for motorists.
Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said: “It’s great news that we’ve completed the first two schemes on the A34 Corridor project.
“The project as a whole will help to transform the corridor and make journeys by car, cycle and walking easier for residents and visitors.
“Road safety around schools is an incredibly important topic, and the new improvements created with the completion of the Gatley Road and Broadway/Wilmslow Road elements of this project will mean students have improved safer crossing points on their journeys to and from school.
“Work will start soon on the next tranche of work, which will see our teams install traffic calming along Broadway.
“We would like to thank the public for bearing with us while the work takes place.”
Works are planned to continue in the area through Autumn, with the next scheme to start along Broadway. Works will also be starting at Cheadle Royal Roundabout (Schools Hill) in late October/early November, with the rest of the scheme expected to take three years to complete.
