Nominate a special person to name Stockport's newest square after

Our town centre is changing fast but it's people that make a place special. Local people are the heart and soul of Stockport and make it the unique, vibrant and amazing town that it is … and we want to celebrate this.

A new public square has been created between Prince’s Street and Redrock linking these two important and growing parts of our town together, and will be used by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Stockport Council are now looking for a name for the new square and would like you to help us with this.

We want the square to be named after a Stopfordian who is either significant in the life of our local community or to you as a resident, and would like to hear your stories about these amazing people and why you think the square should be named after them.

It may be a teacher who inspired you; a neighbour who has spent time and effort helping your community, someone important to Stockport or simply important to you or your family.

There are no rules, only that it is a person connected to Stockport, dead or alive, who is in some way important or meaningful to you, your family, your community or to Stockport as a whole.

Residents have until midnight Sunday 25th February 2018 to tell us who they think the square should be named after, and why.

Tell us the story of your nomination at online or by using one of the standpoint machines we have put in place around the town centre. Standpoint machines can be found in:

• The lobby of the Light Cinema, Redrock Stockport
• Merseyway Shopping Centre (covered mall between JD Sports and Holland & Barratt)
• Stockport Tourist Information Centre, Stockport Market Place

Councillor Kate Butler, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council said, “Regeneration is first and foremost about people and that's why we want the people of Stockport to help us name this new square. We want to hear your story about someone important to you and why you think the square should be named after them. It might be someone everyone knows or simply someone important to you. You could even nominate yourself! What's most important is the story behind your nomination.”

“With benches where visitors can sit and rest, as well as providing a popular link between Prince’s Street and Redrock, the new public square is a very welcome addition to our town centre that will be here for many years to come, giving us a perfect way to celebrate a special Stopfordian both now and for the future. I’d encourage everyone to get involved and tell us their stories.”

All of the suggestions will be considered by a panel of Councillors and local stakeholders who will chose the name of who the square will be officially named after.
