Metrolink is on its way to Stockport

A statement from Councillor Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways & Transport Services:

Many of you will have seen the amazing news — Metrolink is coming to Stockport!

It’s something we’ve been working hard on for a long time and hearing the official announcement this week is a proud moment for all of us. Backing from Government and the Mayor of Greater Manchester is a huge vote of confidence in Stockport.

It means better connections, greener travel choices, and more opportunities for residents and businesses. We’ve already delivered the award-winning Stockport Interchange — designed to be Metrolink ready — and now we’re ready to take the next big step.

We’ve always said that “Next Stop Stockport” is more than a campaign — it’s a clear signal that our borough is moving forward. Whether it’s through new transport links, regeneration projects or investment in our communities, Stockport’s time really is now.

A big thank you to everyone who’s helped get us to this point. Metrolink will be truly transformational — not just for Stockport, but for the whole of Greater Manchester. Whether you’re coming to Stockport to work, live, shop or socialise, Metrolink will connect you right into the heart of our amazing town, from more places than ever before.
