Holocaust Memorial Day - Civic Commemoration
On 27 January 2020 the Council held a Civic Commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery. The theme for 2020 was ‘Stand Together’.
Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
27 January marked the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. It also marked the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Laura Booth, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day, where we commemorate those who lost their lives, is also about educating people on all forms of discrimination, including racism and anti-Semitism and remembering those who lost their lives.
Stockport will continue to remember the Holocaust and subsequent genocides and never forget the horror that was committed on so many men, women and children.”
