The completed works on Greek Street bridge will signal a major moment in Stockport’s ongoing transformation by improving pedestrian routes, connecting new developments, and future‑proofing the town ahead of Metrolink’s arrival.
The project, led by Network Rail, began in March 2025, and has seen a bridge over Europe’s busiest mixed-use rail line replaced.
Once the works are completed on Friday, 27 March, the work will support the wider transformation underway across Stockport.
The completion will mark a significant milestone for the town, by improving a key route for our residents, commuters and businesses, who have been fantastic over the past 12 months whilst the work has taken place. The work will also support the borough’s long-term ambitions for cleaner, greener and more sustainable travel.
With major new developments including Stockport Interchange, new affordable homes at Platform, Weir Mill being brought back to life, and forthcoming projects including Stockport 8, a new neighbourhood with 1,300 homes, and a new social housing scheme at Chestergate, the town centre is continuing to evolve.

The project has also taken the opportunity to future‑proof the Greek Street bridge for potential tram-train options, while supporting the plan to bring Metrolink into the town centre.
This aligns with the borough’s wider transport vision by increasing capacity, improving reliability and offering more sustainable ways to move around the borough.
As part of the project, the council has reshaped and improved the Greek Street roundabout to make it safer and easier for people to move around.
The key changes will include:
- New zebra crossings on the eastern and northern sides of the junction.
- Improvements to the existing zebra crossing on the southern side of the roundabout.
- Improvements to the pedestrian crossing on the western side.
These improvements will create safer, clearer routes across the junction and link directly into the borough’s expanding walking and cycling network.
To complement the bridge renewal, the council has been investing heavily in sustainable travel links across the area, including the opening of a new pedestrian and cycle link connecting the newly renamed ‘Driver John Axon’ railway bridge with Thomson Street, the completion of a new cycle route on Moseley Street in Edgeley and the soon to be completed new Toucan crossing, located on Greek Street itself.
These additions form part of a wider strategy to make sustainable, active travel the easiest choice for shorter journeys, especially as new town centre housing grows around the award-winning Stockport Interchange.
Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council
“The reopening of Greek Street Bridge marks a really important moment for Stockport.
“Not only will it restore a key route for residents, commuters and businesses, but it also strengthens the foundations we’re putting in place for the borough’s future.
“Reopening the road is another step forward in our wider transport vision for Stockport. It supports our long term‑ ambitions for Metrolink and the improved connectivity it will bring.
“We’re committed to building a transport network that works for everyone, and this milestone brings us closer to achieving that.”

Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services
“We have used the opportunity presented by the closure to renew and improve the infrastructure on and around the bridge, as well as working with Network Rail to future proof the structure for potential tram train options in the years ahead.
“This has been a major project, and I want to sincerely thank residents and local businesses for their patience and understanding while the essential work has taken place.
"Your support has been invaluable in helping us reach this point.”
