First look at Stockport’s newest indie hangout spot at Weir Mill

A new CGI depicts Weaver's Square at Weir Mill

Last updated: 6 January 2026

Set against the backdrop of the town’s iconic railway viaduct, the new public square at Weir Mill, dubbed Weaver’s Square, will soon become a venue for live music, street food pop-ups, parties and al fresco dining under the arches. It’ll be another exciting place to hang out with friends and family, adding to the already impressive offering in Stockport town centre, which you can read more about with our nightlife feature.

CGIs have been released by social impact developer Capital&Centric, who are delivering Weir Mill alongside Stockport Council and Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC).

The new neighbourhood, set to complete next spring, has transformed a Grade-II listed mill into 253 homes, made up of one, two and three-bedroom apartments. The new square will feature a range of independent food and drink options, with 10 new bars, restaurants and cafés spilling outside and bringing the social spaces to life.

Weaver’s Square will also include four characterful outdoor spaces totalling a whopping 65,000 sq ft. The new plant-packed outdoor areas will become part of the fabric of Stockport town centre and bring people together day and night.

The spaces will bring a mix of vibes as they include a riverside terrace which will become an evening sun trap perfect for drinks with water views. A central courtyard will provide a lush, green oasis tucked away from the town bustle, whilst the sunken courtyard will be an intimate, hidden nook with tonnes of personality.

Cllr Micheala Meikle, Stockport Council cabinet member for economy, skills and regeneration:

Our town centre regeneration is about more than building new homes, it's about creating vibrant neighbourhoods and breathing new life into Stockport’s heritage, giving our historic buildings a future.

While the Grade-II listed former mill is being carefully restored for residents, the new public square will create opportunities for independent businesses to thrive and for people from across the borough to come and enjoy our buzzing town centre.

It’s incredibly exciting to see how our riverside will soon be opened up into an inviting outdoor space where communities can come together over great food, live music, and creative events from day to night.

John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric:

Weir Mill isn’t your bog-standard development. Whether it’s live music under the iconic viaduct arches, grabbing food with mates or stumbling across the latest pop-up, it’s the kind of neighbourhood that feels buzzing, alive and full of character. With the first food and drink operators set to be announced soon, it’s about to get really exciting.

The team is still on the hunt for indie businesses to help bring the neighbourhood to life, with several already lined up. So, if you’re an indie operator with a great food, drink or retail concept, contact the Capital&Centric team at spaces@capitalandcentric.com.
