Final Recommendations for Ward Changes Published by Local Government Boundary Commission

The review recommends changes to ward boundaries, which could change which ward your home sits under and who represents you.
The final recommendations were published on 5th April, and the full report can be found on the Local Government Boundary Commission website.

The main changes are:

• Changes to 16 wards, no changes to 5 wards
• Changes to the boundaries between various wards including Heald Green, Cheadle & Gatley, Cheadle Hulme South, Cheadle Hulme North, Bramhall North, Edgeley, Brinnington and Central, Manor, Offerton, Reddish North, Reddish South, Bredbury & Romiley, Bredbury & Woodley and Davenport & Cale Green Wards
• The abolishment of Stepping Hill Ward, to be replaced by Norbury and Woodsmoor Ward.

The LGBC are also recommending name changes to several wards due to the boundary changes. This will mean changes of name to:

• Edgeley & Cheadle Heath will become Edgeley
• Brinnington & Central will become Brinnington & Stockport Central
• Cheadle Hulme North will become Cheadle East & Cheadle Hulme North
• Cheadle & Gatley will become Cheadle West & Gatley

So, what happens now? The recommendations must now be approved by Parliament later in 2022.

Subject to parliamentary scrutiny (they can only approve or reject, not amend the recommendations), the LGBC recommendations will come into force before the all out elections in 2023.

Caroline Simpson, Chief Executive at Stockport Council, commented: “I’d like to thank the LGBC for their diligence and the time taken in making these recommendations. I know the recommendations will have been made with fairness at the forefront of the decision making, to ensure our residents are represented fairly and their voices heard equally across the borough.”

In terms of next steps, following the May 2022 local elections there will be a Polling District and Polling Place Review. This will be conducted with public consultations, where residents and other interested parties will be able give their views on the proposed changes.

The Review will look at electoral arrangements for Polling Districts, the administrative sub areas which wards are divided into for the purpose of administering elections, and Polling Places and Stations: the buildings and rooms which voters use to cast their votes.
