Events and activities announced for Stockport digital cultural festival DigiFest

DigiFest is a series of events and activities, reaching specialist areas as well as the general public, that aim to inspire and empower people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the benefits and opportunities of digital technology.

The programme brings together activities and experiences organised by the groups, organisations and individuals of Stockport's DigiKnow community network, who work together to help residents get online and overcome digital exclusion. DigiFest will be a superb way for people to explore digital in creative ways that will help bridge the digital divide caused by digital exclusion.

Everyone is invited to try something new, with a variety of workshops and experiences lined up for DigiFest, including digital photography, podcasting, virtual reality, game creation, a QR code treasure hunt and electronic music, with events taking place at venues across the borough.

DigiFest is also a platform for small businesses and community groups to learn about digital marketing and network with digital inclusion experts. On 29th February, the DigiKnow ‘Leaping across the digital divide' seminar will feature speakers and panel discussions from national, regional and local leaders in digital inclusion, displays from DigiKnow alliance members, and a chance to exchange ideas and make new connections.

Councillor Jilly Julian, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, says: "I'm delighted to announce the start of DigiFest, a month-long celebration of digital culture and innovation in Stockport, Town of Culture. DigiFest is for everyone. You can enjoy free family activities, workshops for businesses and VCFSEs and a seminar on digital inclusion. You'll discover how digital technology can improve your life and work and have fun along the way. You'll also boost your confidence and motivation to keep learning and exploring the digital world.

DigiFest is brought to you by DigiKnow, a community network that helps everyone get online and make the most of digital opportunities. I'm really proud of this network who have already supported over 50,000 residents with their digital needs. Digital technology can help you stay healthy and happy, giving you opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with others. Digital is constantly evolving, and we want to help you keep up with it and use it to enhance your life and work.”

DigiKnow is a collaboration between Stockport Council and partners to help Stockport residents to get online and develop their digital confidence. It is managed by Stockport Council and delivered by Starting Point Community Learning Partnership, working alongside various local, regional and national organisations, who provide free community classes, drop-in support sessions, device and data loans, and a device recycling scheme. For help, call the DigiKnow Helpline at 07724 217888, visit the DigiKnow web-pages or drop into your local library.

Councillor Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport, says: “It’s fantastic to see these digital events on offer as part of our Town of Culture programme. Digital technologies can enable people from different backgrounds and cultures to connect and communicate with each other and learn from diverse perspectives and experiences. They can also provide access to information, resources and new opportunities that might otherwise be unavailable to them. Increasing digital inclusion across our communities, can help build diverse and inclusive communities and promote social justice and equity.”
