Electoral register checks underway in 2022 Annual Canvass
Stockport residents are being urged to look out for information from Stockport Council to check their electoral details, or risk losing their voice in future elections.
The annual canvass – which allows the council to keep Stockport’s Electoral Register up to date, ensuring residents are able to vote in future elections – is now underway.
On receiving the information from the council, residents are being asked to follow the instructions on any correspondence to ensure that the electoral details for every address in Stockport are kept up to date.
If they do not respond to correct any outdated or inaccurate information, residents could lose their chance to have their say in important future local and general elections, so it’s crucial that everyone checks that their details are up to date.
Caroline Simpson, Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer at Stockport Council, said:
“It’s important that all residents keep an eye out for an email or letter from the Electoral Registration Office in the coming weeks, so that we can make sure all the information on the Electoral Register is accurate.
“The easiest way to respond to your message is online. If you are not registered to vote, your name won’t appear on any messages we send.
“To register to vote for future elections, visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and you can register in just five minutes.
“This year’s annual canvass is especially important as next year will see the 2023 all-out Local Elections take place. Every seat on the Council will be contested and this will be residents’ chance to have their say on who runs Stockport Council, so it’s important to be registered to vote in good time in order to cast your vote at these important elections.”
People who have moved recently are encouraged to look out for registration messages from the Council, which may arrive either by email or by post, as these residents are least likely to be registered to vote at their current address with the correct details.
