Council welcomes Northern's to introduce partial rail service to Rose Hill Marple

Northern will operate new services after previously announcing closure of line to Rose Hill Marple

Stockport Council has welcomed Northern’s decision to introduce a partial service to Rose Hill Marple from September 14.

In July, the operator announced that the line would be temporarily closed from September 14 until December after the Coronavirus pandemic disrupted the franchise’s driver training programme.

But following collaborative work between the franchise, councillors and MPs, Northern has announced the following:

The morning services to Rose Hill will be:
07.43 Manchester Piccadilly – Rose Hill Marple (arr 08.11)
08.05 Manchester Piccadilly – Rose Hill Marple (arr 08.36)

The afternoon service from Rose Hill will be:
15.14 Rose Hill Marple – Manchester Piccadilly (arr 15.46)

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, said: “Northern is pleased to be reintroducing a partial service between Rose Hill Marple and Manchester Piccadilly from 14 September, primarily to support local school traffic with two services in the morning and a return in the afternoon.

"The impact of the covid-19 pandemic has affected all operators and, in particular, has prevented the training of hundreds of drivers and train crew, as well as the availability of colleagues who are shielding. This, in turn, has restricted the amount of services that can be operated.

"Our aim is to return to a full service as soon as we are able. We are incredibly proud of the dedication and commitment shown by our colleagues in their efforts in rebuilding the timetable across the network.

“As we work towards reintroducing services and re-instating our driver training programme, we have had to make some very tough decisions. However, we have listened very carefully to feedback from the local community on the Rose Hill service, recognising the need to bring back the service sooner than planned.

“We will also retain our replacement bus service on this route, meaning customers will have travel options throughout the day.

“Customers should please check their journey before travelling.”
