Council Tax statement - Councillor Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council
I know many of you will be all too aware of the major financial challenges facing councils across the country.

The cost of providing essential services is rising fast, yet the funding we receive simply isn’t keeping pace. As a result, we have been forced to make nearly £26 million in savings this year—difficult decisions that no council wants to make but are necessary to keep Stockport financially stable.
Despite these pressures, Stockport remains in a stronger position than many other councils. Thanks to our robust and responsible approach to financial management, we continue to balance the books, ensuring we can still deliver the services that matter most to residents. But we can’t be complacent—without real reform of how councils are funded, the challenges will only grow.
Over 70% of our budget is dedicated to protecting the most vulnerable, particularly Adult Social Care and Children’s Services. These services are lifelines for thousands of residents, and it is vital that we protect them while making sure Stockport remains a great place to live, work, and visit.
Investing in Stockport’s Future
Even in tough times, there’s plenty to be optimistic about. Stockport’s momentum is undeniable, and the transformation of our borough continues:
• Protecting the Most Vulnerable – We’ve invested in frontline services, including the opening of the brand-new Lisburne School building, providing vital support for children with complex needs.
• Supporting Families in Need – Over 2,500 children received support through the Family Support Voucher Scheme, part of our work with the Household Support Fund.
• Investing in Better Care – We continue to embrace new technology to improve social care services, making sure residents receive the support they need in the best way possible.
• Stockport Exchange’s Final Phase – Our flagship business district continues to grow, bringing new jobs and opportunities for residents
• Stockroom Opening Soon – A brand-new, state-of-the-art creative hub in the heart of the town centre, set to become a key community space and part of our acclaimed town centre regeneration.
• LGC Council of the Year Finalist – We’ve been shortlisted for this prestigious national award, recognising our commitment to delivering for residents and keeping Stockport moving forward.
While the financial outlook for councils remains tough, Stockport is meeting these challenges head-on. By focusing on smart investments, prevention-first approaches to care, and disciplined financial management, we will continue to deliver the quality of life and opportunities that Stockport residents deserve.
Thank you for your continued support.
