Come and explore the new relief road this Sunday

Packed full of sporting activities for all ages, the community day will give you and your family the chance to come down and take part in a range of great events, as well as get an up-close look at the work that’s been taking place.

The final details of the event have just been announced to make sure visitors can get the most fun out of the day, and a free regular shuttle bus has been arranged to get visitors to and from the event. Running throughout the day from the Hazel Grove Park & Ride visitors and runners/racers are being encouraged to use the shuttle bus to help keep the local roads
clear.

The events planned for the day are:

9:30am – Wheelchair 5K: wheelchair racers including up and coming Paralympians will take part in a 5k timed race.
10:00am – A6MARR 5k run: 1,200 runners will be taking to the road for a timed run.

All of the places in the run and the wheelchair race are now all fully booked but they’d all love your support, so do come down and cheer the runners and racers on!

11:00am – 3:00pm: There will be a wide range of activities taking place for you to come along and enjoy (no pre-booking required), including:

  • “Let’s Ride” with British Cycling
  • Cycle obstacle courses with Ceracycle
  • Try your hand at wheelchair racing with Stockport Wheelchair Racing Club
  • Cycle skills training
  • Free bike maintenance
  • Fun games for all ages
  • As well as the chance to walk, run or cycle along parts of the new road at your leisure

3:00pm – Classic car parade: Around 200 classic cars will be taking to the new road for the event finale. Come down and watch vehicles from the past 100 years be the first to drive along the new road.

All events are free for everyone to attend and will be taking place on the section of the relief road just off Macclesfield Road, SK7 6DT.

Councillor Kate Butler, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council said: “This Sunday promises to be a great day for all the family on the new A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road, so whether you like to run, walk or cycle there will be something for you to enjoy. We do hope that you can come down and join in with the fun, and take the opportunity to see the new road up close for yourself – something that won’t be possible once vehicles are on it!”
