News: International Day of Older People is celebrated

Stockport is proud to mark International Day of Older People this October with inspiring stories and community events that showcase the strength, kindness, and the part older residents play in making our borough a great place to live.

Most people slow down at 82 – not Keith Mills.

To celebrate 60 years of marriage to his wife Jeanette, Keith walked 32 miles from Sheffield Hallam University, where the couple met in the 1960s, to their local pub in Stockport.

The walk raised funds for Forever Friends of Uganda, a children’s charity the couple founded which builds and renovates schools and supports the local community.

Keith said:“The challenge was a bit scary at my age, but also very exciting. Every penny raised will help to give the children we support a better chance of a meaningful future.”

Meanwhile, Bernard has been recognised for more than two decades of service at Heaton Norris Community Centre. After a health emergency changed his life, Bernard dedicated himself to volunteering and has played a huge role in transforming a once-derelict building into a thriving hub.

The centre now runs groups and activities for all ages, including toddler sessions, youth groups, older people’s gatherings, and its much-loved Shine SEND group.
