Celebrate Libraries Week with events at Stockport libraries!
3rd – 9th October is National Libraries Week and this year’s theme is ‘Never stop learning’.
Stockport Libraries are celebrating the Week with a packed programme of events for all the family. Come to your library and see all that your local library has to offer!
On Saturday 1st October we also have our annual Fun Palaces events at Central and Hazel Grove library. There are loads of fun activities to try, from slime-making to ethnic art to steel drumming. Drop in for free to try your hand at something new: the events are running from 10.30am – 1.30pm.
Throughout the week, Stockport libraries are running drop-in sessions with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, where you can speak to a representative about fire-proofing your home, and find out if you are eligible for a free home safety fire assessment. Join the team at the following dates and locations:
- Monday 3rd October – 10am – 4pm – Central Library
- Tuesday 4th October – 2pm – 3pm – Hazel Grove Library
- Wednesday 5th October – 10.30am – 12.30pm – Bredbury Library
- Wednesday 5th October – 2pm – 4pm – Reddish Library
Are you interested in learning more about fostering? Our Foster team are offering drop-in awareness sessions during the week. Drop-in to visit the team at the following dates and locations:
- Wed 5th October – 2pm – Great Moor Library
- Thursday 6th October – 2pm – Cheadle Library
- Friday 7th October – 10.30 am – Central Library
Libraries really are so much more than physical books! Our online services are ever-expanding, and during Libraries Week, on Friday 7th October, there is a special online health event hosted by Borrowbox. Log on from 10am – 11am to join Caitlin Cady, who will explore the theme of lifelong learning through meditation and mindfulness. Sign up here.
To celebrate the end of Libraries Week, on 8th October at One Stockport Hub will be the fantastic Human Library event. Guests, or ‘readers’ will be able to borrow someone (a ‘book’) and ask any questions without judgement, to learn about their story and let go of any unconscious bias. Drop in to the One Stockport Hub from 11am – 3pm.
And of course, there are the regular weekly Storytime sessions at all libraries across Stockport: if you’ve not brought your little one along before now is the perfect time! Enjoy stories, songs and crafts for children under 5, plus get the opportunity to meet likeminded parents. Check out the events calendar on the Stockport Council website to find out when the next Storytime is in your local library.
Councillor Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Parks and Leisure Services, commented: “Stockport libraries have fantastic events on all year around. They’re such a vital service in our community, from helping people get online, supporting those feeling isolated or just lending residents their next great read!"
“Libraries Week is the perfect time to engage with your local library, even if you’ve never been a member before. Whether you’re reading, brushing up your digital skills or attending one of the many regular events, you’ll be sure to participate in the theme of lifelong learning which defines this year’s national celebration.”
