Calling all artists and makers – submissions now open for a special Stockport Centenary Open Exhibition
Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery will be commemorating its centenary in October 2025.

This landmark building was built with funds raised by the people of Stockport in honour of the fallen of World War I and now commemorates those who died as a result of subsequent conflicts.
As well as its role as a war memorial, the Gallery was built as an inspirational space where people could enjoy beautiful art and crafts and the space has hosted many high-profile exhibitions and activities over the last 100 years.
The Gallery has always helped showcase the very best work from Stockport artists and makers and to mark its centenary year, we are celebrating Stockport's creative community by holding a special Centenary Open Exhibition which will take place between Sunday 22 June and Friday 22 August.
We are inviting artists and makers working in different forms and based throughout Stockport to submit one artwork which they feel represents their best work and justifies inclusion in this landmark exhibition.
Work can be 2D, 3D or in video/digital form and can be put together in a range of media, including paint, drawing, photography, textiles and sculpture. Work should not have been previously exhibited at the Gallery.
Artworks will be accepted on a first come, first served basis as space allows and will need to meet exhibition guidelines. Works need to be handed in at the Gallery between Thursday 12 June and Sunday 15 June.
The public will be invited to vote for their favourite artworks and the winners will be announced in August. Stockport Art Guild will also be making a special award to an artist between 17 and 25 years old through the Michael Hartley Rose Award.
Councillor Helen Foster-Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport at Stockport Council, said: “For 100 years, Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery has stood as a powerful symbol of remembrance and creativity at the heart of our community.
“As we mark this important centenary, we not also honour those who sacrificed their lives but we also celebrate the enduring role of the gallery as a space for reflection, expression and connection.
“I’m especially delighted that local artists now have the opportunity to be part of history through the Stockport Centenary Open Exhibition – and I encourage creative people from across the borough to submit their work and help shape this special moment in Stockport’s cultural story.”
