Build your child’s learning and growth with a smile, a chat and play

Next week, our 0-5 service Start Well, will offer top tips to make the most of everyday moments to boost your child's learning and growth.

Build your child’s learning and growth with a smile, a chat and play

‘Little Moments Together,’ is a campaign to highlight the vital role that a parent’s everyday interactions with their child play in their early development. Every smile, cuddle, chat, and game you share with your child is a building block for their communication skills and overall brain development.

From Monday 23rd to Friday 27th June a variety of special sessions and activities will support you and your family, including learning at home tips, speech and language development, toilet training, exploring new foods and transitioning from nursery to school. Check the Start Well Events calendar for full details.

Cllr Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, said:
“The Start Well Week of Action is a fantastic initiative that underscores our commitment to supporting families in Stockport. By being part of the Family Hubs networks, Start Well ensures that parents and carers have access to a wide range of resources and support within their local communities.

“Family Hubs are designed to bring together all the available support, making it easier for families to find the help they need to give their children the best start in life. We are proud to offer such comprehensive support and look forward to seeing the positive impact of ‘Little Moments Together’ on our children's development.”

The UK government affirms that 90% of brain growth happens before the age of five. Many disadvantaged children in the UK start school developmentally months behind their peers, particularly in speech and language ability. This gap often widens over time, affecting academic success and future employment.

Start Well’s ‘Little Moments Together’ week is part of a wider UK campaign to educate parents and carers about the importance of brain development in the first five years and the crucial role they play. By making the most of simple interactions and daily routines, little moments can have a big impact.

One Stockport Family Hubs are part of our Stockport Live Well approach, which focusses on connecting communities and putting people at the heart of everything we do.
