Black History Month: A time to celebrate diverse communities in Stockport

This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating Sisters’, and is a chance to learn more and say thank you to the trailblazing black women who have pioneered communities in Stockport and beyond.

Throughout October, there is a jam-packed programme of events across Stockport to celebrate Black History Month and the amazing diverse communities we have here in the borough.

On Saturday 7th October, Fun Palaces return to Stockport libraries! Visit Central or Brinnington Library from 10.30am to enjoy a range of cultural activities, including your chance to try your hand at the steel drums! While you’re there, why not check out the curated displays of titles by ethnically diverse authors, and see if you can find something new to read? They will be available across Stockport libraries this October, and are a great way to explore different cultures through literature.

There are a whole host more events that you can get involved in this Black History Month, including a special Black History Sunday service to kick off the month on Sunday 1st October. Visit Tiviot Dale Methodist Church, Stockport, SK1 1TA, as they reflect on the past and share hope for the future of our black communities.

Other events include an arts and crafts drop-in for all the family, hosted by Arc at the Hatworks museum on 13th October from 10.30am – 12.30pm.

For an informative afternoon, join the Miss Diagnosis panel discussion about black women’s healthcare hosted by The Zebra Partnership on Saturday 14th October. Join the panel in The Space (26 Saint Petersgate, SK1 1HD) from 1pm for a discussion about misdiagnosis and how we can combat unconscious bias within healthcare. Book your ticket via Eventbrite.

If you’re up for a party, join the Matriarchs of Movement for a silent disco at Central Library from 6pm – 8pm on 26th October. There is also a film screening of After the Flood at the Light Cinema on 25th October from 7pm, and a celebration at Heaton Norris Community Centre from 4pm – 8pm on 27th October.
