A good yarn is the key to living well in Edgeley

Last updated: 15 July 2026

At Edgeley Library, the Knit and Natter group captures what Live Well is all about, helping people feel more confident, connected and supported to take positive steps for their wellbeing while building lasting friendships and stronger community ties.

The group was set up nearly six years ago and members knit and crochet items for local charities, including neonatal services at Stepping Hill Hospital and Neighbourhood Charity Crafters based at St Matthew’s Church in Edgeley. But while their creations make a real difference to others, members say it is the friendship, laughter and sense of community that brings them back.

I've been coming since the start, nearly six years now. It's for meeting friends really, not just knitting.

For me it's about the company, we have such a laugh.

The group's welcoming atmosphere has helped many people build new connections. Valerie, who moved to Stockport after retiring, said volunteering and getting involved in community activities helped her make friends and feel part of her new hometown.

The group also welcomes younger visitors during school holidays, helping bring different generations together.

During a recent visit, Councillor Oliver met members of the group and learned more about the difference it makes to people's lives, as well as the wider services available through the library.

Knit and Natter is a brilliant example of Live Well in action. It shows how something as simple as coming together for a chat, a brew and a shared hobby can help people feel connected, supported and part of their community. The group makes a real difference to the people who attend, and it is wonderful to see that kindness reaching even further through the items members create for local charities.

Now that Edgeley Library is a Live Well Space, residents can be signposted to local support, wellbeing activities and opportunities in their area, helping more people to live happier, healthier lives.
