Moving traffic enforcement

In February and March 2023, we consulted on the proposal that local authorities are able to apply for new powers to be able to enforce laws against moving traffic contraventions (offences). Previously these powers could only be enforced by the police.

Find out more about the moving traffic offences consultation.

Stockport Council was granted these powers, and we're now starting a gradual roll out of enforcement through the use of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at various locations across the borough.

The main offences we're targeting at this stage are:

  • banned left or right turns; when a driver ignores signs informing them which direction they should take. Ignoring these can be dangerous and could result in an accident
  • banned left turn sign
  • banned right turn sign
  • yellow box junctions; crisscross lines painted at carriageways to help aid the flow of traffic and keep spaces free for emergency vehicles

We gained these powers so that we can target key areas in the borough to:

  • make roads safer for those walking and cycling
  • reduce congestion
  • improve journey times
  • improve air quality
  • increased safety and cleaner air around schools

We'll be using automated cameras to enforce the restrictions in these locations:

  • restricted right turn on to Bramhall Lane/A6 (near Blossoms pub)
  • restricted right turn on to High Street, from Massie Street, Cheadle
  • yellow box outside A6/Sainsbury’s in Hazel Grove junction
  • restricted right turn on Georges Road on to A6 at Heaton Norris
  • Warren Street bus gate

We’re currently preparing the sites listed above ahead of the cameras being installed and switched on.
