2. Produce Hall and 28-29 Market Place

We are committed to seeing Stockport Market Place and Underbanks transformed and become a must visit destination.

The Market Place is emerging as a hub for food and drink in Stockport with award winning bars and restaurants. We now want to build on this even further.

We are offering the leases on key buildings we own. The Produce Hall and 28/29 Market Place are to anchor tenants who have the potential and proven ability to transform the buildings into must visit destinations. The use of the buildings in this way will help drive footfall to the existing offers in the marketplace. This is including the covered and outdoor markets.

In 2017, there was an open selection process offering interested parties the chance to submit their vision for the buildings. They had to demonstrate how their business case would achieve this as well as be financially viable long term. To support all applicants’ free business planning support was offered.

All applications received have been assessed by a panel against a series of publicised criteria. It has always been our intention to assess each submission solely on the strength of the application. The recommendation made by the selection panel to the council’s Cabinet following this evaluation process was unanimous.

On 14th November, the council’s Cabinet gave their full support to the submissions made for both buildings by Steve Pilling. And then granted approval to begin the formal lease negotiations with them.

Mr Pilling’s submission showed how their plans for the Produce Hall and 28/29 Market Place will truly transform the area. The submission were built upon a strong financial foundation and wealth of proven success. Giving us confidence that the plans will be both transformational and sustainable. Each of the applications we received had their own strengths however Steve Pilling’s submission demonstrated significant strengths over the others.

Steve Pilling is a highly successful restaurateur with over 30 years running award winning restaurants. These include;

  • Damson
  • Dockyard
  • La Cantina
  • Roost
  • The Moor Top in Heaton Moor
  • The Dog and Partridge in Didsbury
  • formerly Sam’s Chop House and Mr Thomas’ Chop House.

His vision for the Produce Hall is to bring a casual dining offer to Stockport. He will highlight a number of different cuisines built upon his many years of experience. This is a concept he has been looking to launch in the right place for a number of years. In 28/29 Market Place he plans to launch a vegetarian offer for lunchtime and evening diners.

We now hope to work with other applicants to try and find them a place for their proposed offer. At the same time, we are working closely with Pure who will be moving their café into Prince’s Street. This is where they can benefit from the opportunities Redrock will bring.

We are also continuing to work with and support the three businesses currently in the Produce Hall. We are helping them to have a more successful future elsewhere within the Market Place.
