Local and Combined Authority Mayoral Elections 2024

Local elections took place in Stockport on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Stockport is made up of 21 wards, each represented by 3 local councillors. One seat for each ward was up for election on 2 May, with 21 seats being contested in total.

At the same time, Combined Authority Mayoral elections took place across all 10 councils in Greater Manchester to elect a Mayor for the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Registering to vote

In order to vote in these elections, you will need to be registered to vote. The deadline to apply to register to vote was midnight on Tuesday 16 April. To find out more, visit our register to vote webpage.

Voting by post

If you wish to vote by post and did not currently have a postal vote in place, you needed to have applied for a postal vote by 5pm on Wednesday 17 April.

If you applied to vote by post before Friday 12 April, your postal vote was collected by Royal Mail for 1st class posting on Thursday 18 April.

If you applied after Friday 12 April but before 5pm on Wednesday 17 April, your postal vote was in our second despatch which went 1st class with Royal Mail on Wednesday 24 April.

In addition to posting your postal vote back to us, you can also return it by hand to the Elections Office at the Town Hall during office hours, or on election day hand it in to any polling station in your ward or at the Elections Office by 10pm and it will still be counted.

To vote by proxy, you will need to have applied by 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.

Standing as a candidate

If you wish to stand as a candidate at these local elections, you must be validly nominated as a candidate. The earliest you may submit a nomination paper is Wednesday 27 March, and the statutory deadline is 4pm on Friday 5 April. No nominations may be accepted after the close of nominations on 5 April.
